2009-2010 School Profile

DESCRIPTION OF SCHOOL Edward Douglas White Catholic High School is a Diocesan, co-educational junior high (8 and 9) and senior high (10, 11, 12) school located in the Houma-Thibodaux Catholic Diocese in South Louisiana. The school population numbers 753: 8th—138 students, Freshmen—164, Sophomores—148, Juniors—147, and Seniors—156. Of the 56 faculty members, all have either a BS or BA degree; 21 have Masters degrees; 4 have Masters degrees plus 30 hours; and 1 has a Doctorate degree.

SCHOOL ACCREDITATION The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is approved by the Louisiana State Department of Education. Memberships include the National Catholic Educational Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY E. D. White is the only Catholic high school in the civil parish (county) of Lafourche. Additionally, students travel from three other civil parishes, St. James, Terrebonne, and Assumption, to attend school at EDW. Economically, this section of Louisiana relies heavily on agriculture— primarily sugarcane, the oil industry, and related oil industry products. Nicholls State University is located within a mile of the school campus.

GRADING PROCEDURE The school year is made up of two semesters of two quarters each. Report cards are sent quarterly. All classes and semester grades are reported on the transcript. CUMULATIVE GPAs are based on semester grades. WEIGHTED CLASS RANK is based on semester averages. WEIGHTED GPA is obtained by adding .04 to the cumulative GPA for each honors course completed at E. D. White. The following quality point value is used in determining GPA and semester averages:

A = 4.00 B = 3.00 C = 2.00 D = 1.00 F = 0.00

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Twenty-five credits must be completed in the following categories: English--4 credits, Health and P.E.--2, Math--3, Religion--4, Science--3, Social Studies--3, Electives--6. Completion of the Service Awareness Program is also required.

HONORS DIPLOMA An honors diploma will be awarded to 2010 graduates with 9 honors courses and un-weighted GPA of 3.50. These honor graduates are ranked above all other students.

Full credit courses include Accounting; Advanced Math; Algebra I, II; Art I, II, III, IV; Band I, II, III, IV; Biology I, II; Chemistry; Chorus I, II; Computer Science; Family and Consumer Sciences I; Financial Math; Fine Arts Survey; French I, II, III; General Business; Geometry; Latin I, II; Multimedia Productions; Psychology; Physical Science; Physics; P.E. I, II, III, IV; Publications I, II; Reading I; Spanish I, II, III; Speech I, II; Web Mastering.

Honors courses are offered in Advanced Math, Algebra II, American History, Biology I, II, Calculus, Chemistry, Civics, English I, II, III, IV, V, Physics, and World History. Skills courses are offered in English and Reading.  There are no AP or IB courses offered.

TEST SCORES The ACT is the primary test taken by EDW students.

* E. D. White Catholic High School has had the highest composite ACT score in the area for the past five years.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION The Class of ’07 had two commended students; the Class of ’08 had one commended student; and the Class of '09 had one commended student.

SCHOLARSHIPS/FINANCIAL AID The Class of 2009 received $2,375,440 in scholarships and financial aid. In addition, 105 of the 145 members of the graduating class of 2009 received a TOPS Award.
